A team of alumni, lead by Boat School Chief Instructor Sean Koomen, will head to Australia two months ahead of the 2019 Australian Wooden Boat Festival to build two Haven 12½.The Haven is Joel White’s centerboard version of the classic 12 ½ designed by Nat Herreshoff, one of the country’s foremost naval architects.
The team will build their boat at the Wooden Boat Centre in Franklin, 50 miles south of Hobart, work with native celery top pine, and have the boat ready to launch and auction at the festival in two months.

It’s a fun challenge for the crew of boat builders, some chosen for their speed as builders, some for the quality of their detail work, and some for problem solving and general resourcefulness. The school invited all of their alumni to apply for the project and had to choose from 25 qualified applicants going back more than 20 years. The crew includes:
