Join the Boat School and thousands of other boater’s in celebrating the world of wooden boats!

It’s time to celebrate everything wooden boats at the 41st Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. Stop by the Boat School’s booth to learn about the school and our new Marine Systems Intensives, take in a demo by one of our instructors at the boatbuilding stage, or tour a Boat School boat at the dock, including the newly launched 36′ motorsailor SEA BEAST.

There are also TWO campus tours going on Festival weekend. Stop by Friday, September 8th at 3:30 PM or on your way out of town Monday, September 11th from 9:00 AM – Noon.

The SEA BEAST

Come view the traditionally built and newly launched 36’ wooden motor sailor SEA BEAST at the Boat School dock!  Owners Steve and Meredith Roberts selected Port Townsend local Carl Chamberlin to design the boat that Chamberlin describes as a cross between a Fishboat and a Lake Union Dreamboat.  ‘Sea Beast’  is built of Douglas fir planking on white oak framing and reflects Carl’s design aesthetic of elegant simplicity.

The owners chose the Boat School for the project to help promote student learning.  Over three years, 56 boatbuilding students cut their teeth on the project, as they learned lofting, framing, planking, decking, interiors and more. The school’s Chief Instructor, Sean Koomen, notes “The Sea Beast project has been a great opportunity for the Boat school to give the students lots of practice in framing and planking in addition to helping the school grow in areas such as project management.  Congratulations to instructor Ben Kahn and all his students for a fantastic job!”
